Visited Spinalonga in 2010,found it very moving and would love to go back when more restoration has been done. After my visit,i bought the book, The Island by Victoria Hyslop. What a book, couldnt put it down, parts brought a tear to my eyes, the heartbreak the people sufferd must have been huge.Iam now looking for more books to find out more.

My husband and I took the trip to Spinalonga in 1994! Having just read The Island by Victoria Hislop, which is a brilliant book, I felt I had to learn more about Spinalonga. In 1994 we boarded the boat The Christina, the Captain Manolis Koukourakis was a real character and made our trip enlightening and enjoyable. There is something about Spinalonga which haunts you. At the time we thought why are we visiting a leper colony, but we had the most amazing day. Years later I pick up the book The Island and once again I am reminded of our visit. The trip over to the island was beautiful, a hot day, calm sea, blue skies and then the island came into view. Victoria Hislop gives a wonderful portrait of actual people who might have been living there. Crete is a lovely island and anyone visiting, should also visit Spinalonga.

This is a visit which everyone who visits this part of Crete should make. Having returned I am now in the process of gathering more information about leprosy. According to our guide it costs £20 to cure a person of leprosy however it should be noted that the WHO have offered this treatment for free since 1995.

Iwent on a guided tour of this small island and was thoroughly engrossed in the history. I did not know vey much about Leperosy, it gave me a great hunger for more knowledge about the desease and the island. I came away and bought books on the island, I haven't been able to stop thinking and talking about it.I would encourage anyone visiting Crete to go there you will be drawn into the history of the island. I have also recently read the book "the Island" what a great bok that was.

My Husband and I told a lady in a shop that we were gong to Crete and she said whatever you do hire a hire and go to Elounda/Spinalonga. We stayed in Gouves and hired a car and went off for the day. What a wonderful experience. Elounda was beautiful. WE sat in a loely little taverna and had lunch then did a boat trip to the small island of Spinaloga. WE had a guide who was absolutely brilliant. He told us all the history and the sad stories and endearing stories. So much so that we bought two books about the island after our guided tour. WE loved it so much we are going back to Gouves this year and will definately go back to Elounda/Spinaloga/Ag Nic.
