For a quiet holiday you cannot beat malame, the beaches are clean and every hotel or restaurant are keen to provide value for money, wether its just a drink or a three course meal the service is great. There are enough places to get shopping if required if you are self catering,or just want a few presents to take home.
we stopped at mikes hotel and cannot fault the friendly atmosphere and accomodation that was provided for us. the rooms are basic but very clean, and the staff bend over backwards to please and make sure your stay is as comfortable as possible. The food is always fresh and made to a high standard, and you are served massive portions .
This is not a resort for people who require night life, but if you want the peace and quiet or just a lovely romantic holiday this is the place to visit.

Maleme and Asterion Apartment hotel Date : 8- -0 2005

Maleme is excellent if you want a long beach with loads of space ie definitely no feeling of being crowded with tourists. Its clean and wonderful fresh air.You are very near to nightlife if you want it but Maleme itself allows you to relax in peace and quiet.
The Hotel Asterion apartments is fantastic - clean, quiet, nice pool, direct on beach and a wonderful taverna right next door (unfortunately I didn't note the name but the prices are great and the food wonderful - you have to try the fish soup but beware its a meal on its own so don't over order!)
We booked 2 apartments but since each has 2 rooms, one apartment is plenty of space for a family of 4.
Note though that Maleme itself is not picturesque ie its not a "cute" blue&white "typical" Greek island village...its very normal and basic but perfect centre for trips to Chania and eg Paleohora and Elafonisi, etc.
