Just spent 2 weeks in Crete at Aghia Marina (July/Aug 2011).Travelled to Paleochora by local bus through mountains for sightseeing, took approx 1.5 hours, nice journey, well worth it.Paleachora very Greek, picturesque rocky coast one side, other side of town/village broad soft sand.Town very Shirley Valentine, small side streets and very laid back. Had mid day break at taverna/bar overlooking the jetty and stayed for 1.5 hours. Just chilling. Would definitely think of staying ther if bus connections to flights coincide.

I first visited Paleohora in 1977 - again in 1984 & 1989. Saw big changes -especially around the port. Yorgi's was the bar - unfortunately only 4 people could fit in! At the town square where the bus arrived the place was George's. Probably the slowest bar tender in the world but him and his family the most decent of people. No hotel in 1977 - had to stay in courtyards then where local people would charge you a nominal fee for sleeping under the stars or gazing up at trellis filled with vines spread across white washed walls. Fresh yogurt, peaches and grapes for breakfast! In the late 80's the taverna's and bars had started to arrive in numbers. I am now 50 and wish to return with my wife and children. Many happy memories of the cretan goat hunters, fully black garb with wonderfully polished knee length boots. Lazy days, no traffic, the high winds masking the high temperaturs. Good memories. Although I always holiday in North Crete I always go south to Paleohora every year. Excellent Beach Can be windy. Several good eating places buit would recomend Barry Rogers at the Calypso Taverna on the sea front. Acute shortage of public toilets./
