The Samarian Gorge is one of the most beautiful places on earth. It's not for the faint at heart....but totally doable for ages around 8 to 70 without major health issues. Not to be missed. Email me if you'd like and I'll try to help you! mikie

It's a very nice walk I recommend you, you will discover a very beautiful part of Creta.

My wife and I have walked the Gorge twice now. It's amazing what we missed the first time around! This is a must for anyone who is fit enough - do not be fooled into thinking it is only an 11 mile walk. The terrain is difficult at it is extremely hot - but I gaurantee you will not be disappointed.

One of the highlights of my trip to Greece and the Islands, a challenging, breathtaking five hours through unforgettable scenery. Be prepared. And as the guide says "stop first--then look around--then start walking again, always watching where you place your feet, since most of the hike is over stones and rocks. I went in early June starting at 8:00 AM. There were fewer than six hundred people on the trail that day and over the 18K (11 miles) we saw maybe two dozen. Later in the season it is said there may be serval thousand on any given day. Still, not to be missed, with the Sea of Libya waiting at the end and Loutros visible from the ferry to Sfakia.

Most beautiful place. I will go back again. Just remember go down slowly!!!! Don't go down fast or you'll hurt your knees. Pack sandles with you for the beach. In the summer the sand is very hot. Worthwhile to take a bathing suit also to go swimming while waiting for the boat to take you back. Just a fantastic trip. Crete is a dream I plan to go back for a third trip!!!!

When I was first told by my husband (Cretan) that we just had to walk the gorge I must say I wasn't all that enthusiastic, but now I'm so gald I did it and very highly recommend everyone who goes to Crete to do it. I came across some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, and the greatness of it all just leaves you in awe. I do have two suggestions that should be very seriously considered before you decide to do the treck. Firstly, shoes. Be sure to wear strong, supportive, light and most of all comfortable shoes. And secondly, pack light. Take only essentials with you, being water and snacks. Actually there's another very, very important point I shpuld make. Prepare yourself by walking fair distances and streching, especially if your not used to excercise as I couldn't walk for almost a week after!! Enjoy...
