I was stationed at the American base near Iraklion 1964-1966. I revisited the area in September 2005. I was impressed with most of the changes, e.g., food is now refrigerated, bathrooms are clean and sanitary, etc. Every restaurant in which we ate was superb and reasonably priced. (I could do without the men trying to force passersby into certain restaurants at Lions Square.) Most of all, my trip was ruined by the ignorant Greek drivers. They have no concept of "taking your turn" and, consequently, driving is hazardous at best. However, outside of Iraklion, especially in the small villages, the true nature of Cretans still survives. (The only sour note from my trip was asking the breakfast staff at the Lato Hotel if they would warm up my food in a microwave. They think they can prepare food an hour prior to opening, set it aside, and that it will instantly be hot after lighting a flame under the pans when opening the doors!!! It doesn't work like that. My breakfast was always cold and the young women got angry with me for wanting it warm. Next trip will have to include a hotel with a hot breakfast.)

I stayed in the Heraklion area for about 2 months last summer and it was beautiful the whole time I was there. The people were a little stand offish until they became use to me and we had a good time learning about each other's culture. The food was absolutely fantastice and everyone was very kind and helpful. I loved being in Lion's Square also. I also enjoyed all the shops. I plan to go back soon.
